Smash Burger Tacos

If you love burgers AND tacos, you have to try these Smash Burger Tacos!

This is such a fun twist on a classic cheeseburger. Ground beef gets smashed directly onto a flour tortilla and cooked beef-side down on a hot griddle until you get that crispy, browned smash-burger crust.

Then you flip it, add American cheese and finish it with all your favorite burger toppings — lettuce, tomato, pickles and burger sauce.

They’re quick, easy and such a fun dinner when you want something a little different!

Here’s exactly how I made my Smash Burger Tacos!

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef

  • 4 medium flour tortillas

  • Salt, to taste

  • Black pepper, to taste

  • 4 slices American cheese

  • 1 cup shredded lettuce

  • 1 tomato, diced

  • Dill pickle chips

  • Burger sauce, for topping

  • A small amount of oil for the griddle, if needed

Directions

  1. Divide the ground beef into 4 equal portions and roll each portion into a loose ball.

  2. Place one portion of ground beef onto each flour tortilla.

  3. Using clean hands or the back of a spoon, press the beef into a thin, even layer across the tortilla, spreading it almost to the edges.

  4. Season the beef with salt and black pepper.

  5. Heat a large griddle or skillet over medium-high heat. Lightly oil the cooking surface if needed.

  6. Place each tortilla onto the hot griddle with the beef side facing down.

  7. Press firmly with a spatula to make sure the beef has good contact with the hot surface.

  8. Cook for approximately 3–4 minutes, or until the beef develops a browned crust.

  9. Flip the taco and cook for another 1–2 minutes, until the tortilla is lightly toasted and the ground beef reaches an internal temperature of 160°F.

  10. While each taco is still hot, top the beef with a slice of American cheese and allow it to soften and melt.

  11. Remove from the griddle and top with shredded lettuce, diced tomato, dill pickle chips and burger sauce.

  12. Fold like a taco and serve immediately!

Optional Quick Burger Sauce

If you don't already have a favorite burger sauce, here's an easy one you can make at home:

  • ¼ cup mayonnaise

  • 1 tablespoon ketchup

  • 1 teaspoon yellow mustard

  • 1 tablespoon sweet pickle relish

  • Pinch of garlic powder

Mix everything together in a small bowl until combined.

NOTE: This is an optional burger sauce suggestion. You can also use your favorite bottled burger sauce.

A Few Notes

The key to getting that true smash-burger texture is pressing the ground beef into a thin layer on the tortilla and placing it directly onto a hot griddle beef-side down.

Don't make the beef layer too thick. You want it thin enough to cook quickly and get that browned crust.

I love the classic cheeseburger combination of American cheese, lettuce, tomato, pickles and burger sauce, but you can customize these however your family likes!

Other topping ideas:

  • Diced onion

  • Grilled onions

  • Jalapeños

  • Bacon

  • Extra cheese

  • Ketchup and mustard

  • Your favorite burger sauce

These are best served right away while the tortilla is warm and the cheese is melted.
