As a mom, life can often feel like a whirlwind of tasks, appointments, and responsibilities. For our family, our evenings and weekends are jam-packed with shuttling the kids from one sport to the next — practices, homework, games, and competitions. It's so easy to get wrapped up in the chaos!

One thing that has been an absolute lifesaver for me is having a well-structured weekly cleaning routine. Not only does it help me manage my time, but it also gives me the framework to juggle the craziness of being a busy mom — without my house falling apart in the process.
If you've been searching for a simple weekly cleaning routine that actually works for real moms with real schedules, you're in the right place. I'm sharing exactly what I do each day of the week, the cleaning tools that make it possible, and a free printable checklist you can download at the bottom of this post.
Why a Weekly Cleaning Routine Matters
Routines play a huge role in keeping everything in check. They act as a guide, getting my family and me through the day, making sure nothing falls through the cracks. From getting the kids ready for school and keeping the house clean to managing meal times — having a clear path to follow makes everything less stressful.
Let's be honest, it's easy to forget things! Have you ever opened the dishwasher to realize it was never started from the day before? Oops. Or ordered takeout because you never made it to the grocery store? Same. Having a designated day for laundry or grocery shopping keeps me on track and makes sure none of the tasks go unfinished.
Believe it or not, staying organized with a cleaning schedule is part of our emotional well-being too. Knowing what to expect provides a sense of stability and control — especially important for moms juggling several responsibilities at once. When things are predictable, it's easier to manage stress and maintain a positive outlook.
My Weekly Cleaning Routine, Day by Day
Here's exactly how I break up my cleaning each week. The goal is to spread the work out so no single day feels overwhelming — and so my weekends are FREE for family time.
Monday — Reset Day
Strip and wash all bed sheets
Vacuum and mop bedroom floors
Catch up on any laundry from the weekend
Wipe down nightstands and dressers
Light tidy of the whole house
Monday sets the tone for the week. I treat it like a "reset" so we start fresh after a busy weekend.
Tuesday — Bathrooms
Scrub toilets, tubs, and showers
Wipe down counters, mirrors, and faucets
Mop bathroom floors
Wash bathroom rugs
Restock toilet paper, hand soap, and towels
Tuesday is bathroom day. Doing all the bathrooms at once means I'm only pulling out the cleaning supplies once a week instead of every other day.
Wednesday — Kitchen Deep Clean
Wipe down all countertops and appliances
Clean inside the microwave and toaster oven
Mop the kitchen floor
Empty the fridge of expired food
Clean stovetop and oven exterior
Wednesday is when I show my kitchen some love. This is also a great day to check what we need for the rest of the week's meals.
Thursday — Living Spaces
Dust all surfaces (TV stands, shelves, picture frames)
Vacuum couches and chairs
Wipe down light switches and door handles
Tidy the playroom or family room
Vacuum and mop main living areas
Friday — Floors & Final Touches
Vacuum every room in the house
Mop all hard floors
Spot-clean windows and glass doors
Take out all trash and recycling
Final tidy before the weekend
Fridays are when I lean on my Dreame G10 Pro Wet/Dry Vacuum the most. I'll talk more about it below — but if you have one, Fridays become SO much faster because it vacuums and mops at the same time.
Saturday — Light Touch-Ups
One load of laundry
Wipe down high-traffic surfaces
Quick 15-minute pickup with the kids
Sunday — Rest & Plan
Plan the week's meals
Set out the coming week's outfits
Mental reset — minimal cleaning
Sunday is sacred. I do as little as possible and use it to plan the week ahead.
The Cleaning Tools That Make My Routine Possible
I get asked ALL the time what cleaning tools I actually use to make my routine work. The truth is, having the right tools makes a HUGE difference — especially when you're trying to clean efficiently as a busy mom.
My #1 Game-Changer: Dreame G10 Pro Wet/Dry Vacuum
This is hands-down the best investment I've made for my cleaning routine. It vacuums AND mops at the same time, has a self-cleaning function, and honestly cut my floor-cleaning time in half. If you've been on the fence, this is your sign.
Why I love it:
Vacuums and mops simultaneously
Self-cleaning brush head (no more gross brush rolls)
Cordless so I can move room to room
Safe on hardwood, tile, and laminate
Other Tools I Reach For Every Week:
Microfiber cloths (washable, reusable, last forever)
A good all-purpose cleaner
Magic erasers for scuff marks
A microfiber mop for quick spills

🍲 Bonus: How to Make Dinner Easier on Cleaning Days
Here's a tip nobody tells you: the secret to actually following a cleaning routine is not having to cook a complicated dinner on top of it.
My answer? Crockpot meals. I prep everything in the morning, throw it in the crockpot, and by the time I'm finishing up cleaning, dinner is ready.
The two tools I use almost every week:
✨ Drew Barrymore 6qt Crockpot — It's beautiful enough to leave on my counter (no more hiding it in a cabinet), and the 6-quart size is perfect for our family of four with leftovers.
✨ Chicken Shredder — If you eat a lot of shredded chicken (tacos, BBQ sandwiches, soups, salads), this is a $15 game-changer. Shreds a whole crockpot of chicken in literally 30 seconds.
My favorite combo meal: 4 chicken breasts + 1 jar of salsa in the crockpot for 6 hours on low. Shred with the chicken shredder. Serve in tortillas with rice. My family LOVES it.

5 Tips for Sticking to Your Weekly Cleaning Routine
Creating a list is sometimes the easy part — but actually sticking to it? That's where most moms struggle. Here are my top tips:
1. Set a realistic routine. Everyone's schedule looks different. Don't try to copy someone else's exact routine. Adjust mine to fit YOUR life so you're not starting off overwhelmed.
2. Start the day with something that motivates you. For me, that's making my bed and either working out or going for a walk. This sets the tone for the rest of your day. I work harder and feel more motivated after accomplishing a few small tasks right after I wake up.
3. Keep your tasks in one place. I use a daily planner where I track appointments, reminders, and to-do lists. Having everything in one place helps me prioritize when surprise tasks pop up.
4. Know it takes time. Just because you set a routine doesn't mean it'll be perfect right away. It takes weeks to adjust to a new schedule. The only thing that matters is that you keep going.
5. Give yourself grace. Things won't always go to plan. Kids get sick, schedules change, life happens. How you respond to interruptions matters more than being "perfect."
Frequently Asked Questions About Weekly Cleaning Routines
How long should a weekly cleaning routine take each day?
For most rooms, you should be able to complete your daily tasks in 30–45 minutes. The goal of a weekly routine is to break work into smaller chunks so no single day feels overwhelming. If a task is taking you longer than an hour, consider splitting it across two days.
What's the best day of the week to start a cleaning routine?
I recommend starting on a Monday because it gives you a fresh "reset" feeling after the weekend. But honestly, the best day to start is whichever day you actually have time and energy. Just pick one and commit for two weeks.
How do I keep up with a cleaning routine when I have young kids at home?
Build the kids INTO the routine. Even toddlers can put away toys, wipe down low surfaces, or "help" sort laundry. My kids each have a few age-appropriate tasks that match my cleaning days — it's part of how I taught them responsibility while also actually getting things done. (I have a whole post on our chore chart system if you want to see it.)
Can I do a weekly cleaning routine if I work full-time?
Absolutely. Working moms often do best with a "30 minutes a day" approach instead of trying to clean for 2 hours on Saturday. The routine I shared above can be modified to fit a tighter window — just pick the most important task for each day and let the rest go.
What's the best vacuum for a weekly cleaning routine?
I personally use and recommend the Dreame G10 Pro Wet/Dry Vacuum because it cuts my cleaning time in half by vacuuming and mopping at the same time. For families on a budget, a basic stick vacuum works fine too — the most important thing is that you'll actually use it.
Final Thoughts: Start Small and Stay Consistent
Having a weekly cleaning routine for busy moms isn't about having a perfect home or being a perfect mom. It's about creating a rhythm that gives you back your time, your weekends, and your peace of mind.
Start with just ONE day this week. Pick the day that overwhelms you most — for most moms, it's bathrooms or laundry — and tackle just that. Build from there.
